A rally by members of the English Defence League and march by counter-protestors took place in Cambridge on Saturday. This video gives a flavour of the EDL rally; the counter-demonstration seems to have been more cheerful. It’s difficult to be sure of the exact numbers involved, but it’s certainly safe to say that the EDL were massively outnumbered both by the counter-demonstrators and by the police. Other estimates vary; Tom Woodcock, who was a steward for the counter-demonstration, reports that 1,200 biryanis were given out by local restaurants to anti-EDL demontrators.
Before the EDL rally, party leaders on Cambridgeshire County Council issued a statement calling on Cambridge residents to ignore the EDL demonstration and go about their activities as normal.
